Cleaning Tips

Home Detergent / Biz Mix solution of: 1qt. warm water, 1 tsp. Biz brand detergent booster, 1 tsp. liquid dish detergent. Using mainly suds and a soft household scrub brush, shampoo the area gently. Do not rub too aggressively or you may cause texture change. Dab lightly.

Cleaning Fluid
Spot cleaning fluid, such as Energine, available at grocery, discount, & hardware stores. Follow package instructions.

Home Detergent / Ammonia
Mix solution of: 1qt. warm water, 1.6 oz. Ammonia, and 1tsp. liquid dish detergent. Use same technique as with Home Detergent/Biz solution.

Cleaning CollageRust Remover
Like spot cleaning fluids, rust removers are available at grocery, discount, & hardware stores. Be sure to purchase one that is safe for carpeting.

Hair Spray
Apply hair spray to cloth or towel and wipe gently across spot.

For All Spills
1. Time is of the essence when the spill is fresh. The more quickly you attempt to remove it, the more luck you are likely to have. Once a spill is dry, your chances of removing it are much less.
2. Blot or scrape up as much excess as possible before using any cleaning technique. Then, when you’ve finished the steps, be sure to blot again with clean, absorbent cloth or paper towels.

Mattress Cleaning
We have used a wand – type carpet cleaner and a carpet cleaning solution on a mattress quite successfully. It then should be dried properly and thoroughly. A mattress needs a very good vacuum cleaning and should be turned regularly Should you have any bed wetter’s around, turn the mattress over immediately after the accident onto a towel or two and leave until dry. Protect the mattress with a rubber sheet for preference.

Bookshelves
We have thousands of books in our house, and we read them. They get dusty; we get the vacuum cleaner out all along the edges and the tops of the books. You can’t wash books. If your house is very damp, then your books are going to attract mold and mildew. To prevent loss of books, which is tantamount to a national calamity (in our house at least) use a dehumidifier.

Prevention starts at home
New research shows your home may be germier than you think. Theliving area fireplace study and survey come from the Hygiene Council (funded by Reckitt Benckiser, the makers of LYSOL® Brand products). Researchers visited 35 U.S. homes, swabbing for bacteria in 32 locations in each home. Out of the 32 places in the home, the top spots for bacteria are the toilet bowl, kitchen drain, kitchen sponge or counter-wiping cloth, bathtub, and kitchen sink.
Upholstery and Leather Furniture Cleaning Tips: Upholstery Selection
The useful life of upholstered furniture can be increased if the consumer follows a few simple upholstery and leather furniture cleaning service protection rules. It is very important that a upholstery and leather be chosen that is appropriate for its intended use. For example, if velvet covers are available in cotton, nylon and olefin, the nylon velvet might be appropriate for a large family for use in high traffic areas. The olefin velvet could also take heavy use and would be an excellent choice for humid climates where mildew is a problem. The cotton velvet has less abrasion and soiling resistance and so might be more appropriate for moderate activity areas.

Vacuuming
Weekly vacuuming or light brushing is a upholstery care tip that helps to remove soil and protect fabric from the embedding of dirt or grime between fibers which can increase abrasion and wear.

Cushion Turning for Upholstery
The life of upholstered cushions on your furniture can be increasedthrough periodic turning. The weekly reversal of loose cushions will allow even distribution of wear over a long period of time.

Upholstery Furniture Protection
Fabric protection helps to increase the useful life of upholstered furniture by protecting fabrics from soil and stains. Some fabric protections are mill applied and others can be applied in the store or at home just call upholstery cleaning experts.

A protective finish does not eliminate the necessity of proper upholstery care. It modifies the absorbency and soil removal characteristics of a fabric. It does not put a plastic cover on it. Loose dirt should be vacuumed and brushed away before it becomes embedded and harder to remove. Spills and stains should be cleaned away quickly following manufacturer’s fabric care code instructions for furniture cleaning.

Upholstery Cleaning Service, Leather Furniture Cleaning

Some slipcovers can be laundered in the washing machine. Large slipcovers should be cleaned in a commercial machine, but always test for colorfastness before washing

There are four letters in the code, immediately followed by upholstered furniture cleaning service instructions.

Permanent upholstery and suede furniture cleaning service labels will normally be found under the seat cushion. When spot cleaning upholstery furniture, it is always a good idea for consumers to first pretest the fabric for discoloration and shrinkage on an inconspicuous part of the furniture. When overall furniture cleaning is required, professional furniture cleaning will often achieve the most satisfactory results. Never remove cushion covers or arm caps for separate furniture cleaning. This may destroy the backing, cause shrinking and create color changes.

Cleaning Furniture

If you decide to clean your furniture yourself, first keep in mind that you do not want to get the fabric too wet. Although it may seem that more water will allow you to remove more stains, the moisture is in fact your fabric’s worst enemy.lounging on the couch
Try to presoak the stains with a fabric cleaner (as mild as possible) before actually putting any water on the fabric. Then, when extracting the water, be sure to get as much out of the chair as possible. Avoid getting any metal portion of wet or it will rust the metal of your furniture, especially if you do get it all dry.. Synthetic fibers (polyester, etc) are fairly easy to clean without ruining the color or the fabric. If, however, your cushions use more than 50% cotton or especially if they use a fabric called Haitian cotton, you should have them professionally cleaned (these fabrics require special chemicals to clean and are just too easy to ruin if you don’t know what you’re doing). Finally, avoid using vinegar or anything acidic as these will definitely damage the fiber (always test any cleaner on a non-visible area of the chair before starting).

Other Household Tips:

   Cleaning Furniture

Wooden furniture can be cleaned with: Detergent solution, Soap solution, Washing -up liquid solution, Vinegar solution, Rinse off and leave to dry.

Raw wood then should be dressed with a mixture of beeswax and oil or turpentine (which is an oil derived from pine trees). Wax will not clean if your furniture is heavily soiled, unless it is antique wood in which case your furniture should be kept waxed as a preventative measure, to avoid drying and subsequent warping. Teak or linseed oils are the usual wood dressing oils. If your wood furniture is laminated or varnished, as most modern furniture is, then it will not need dressing at all. Avoid the spray polish anywhere around your home – it does not clean, but merely attracts and seals in even more soiling. Life goes on well enough without it. So throw it out.
If your furniture is antique and valuable, then French polishing is an answer to a poor finish. This is a mixture of shellac in mentholated spirit and it leaves a beautiful glossy finish, which is easily maintained by a polish with a dry cloth after a gentle quick wash if needed.

Fabrics
Fabrics and tricky -curtains can be washed but we hold no hope out at all for chairs which attract children, cats, dogs and large amounts of food and grease and worse. You may be able to steam the chair fabric but isn’t prevention rather better than cure? Throw a cover over the chair – you can throw that in the washing machine. Spot treatment on most fabrics will show as spots when dry and the whole begins to look very unsightly -clean in some places and not in others. Always consider the end result when cleaning or attempting to clean.

How To Avoid Dusting Completely

Is it necessary, and can it be avoided? But of course it can be busy living area avoided! What a waste of time. Dust is human hair and skin wrapped around grease from humans and particulates from the atmosphere. You dust, you put it back into the atmosphere and half an hour later, it is back again. With a new lot to keep it company. Real dust is what we find on a construction site -plaster, cement, particulate, concrete, wood -the list is endless. That has to be removed, but not in ways you would think. It takes the same length of time to wash a surface as it does to dust, and the effect lasts for a week. Think it over when you next pick up your feather duster, and go and have a cup of tea instead. Then throw out your feather duster or use it on the spiders hiding in the lampshades.

Tips for Cleaning Leather Upholstery
Leather is a popular choice in furniture, car interiors, clothes and accessories. Along with the cozy leather sofa and the great shoes comes the frustration of keeping them clean.

Always keep leather furniture out of direct sunlight to prevent drying and cracking the leather. To nourish the leather, feed it a “hide food.” Mix one part white vinegar with two parts linseed oil, shake well, and apply to the leather using a soft cloth. Work in a circular motion, covering the entire surface. Rub in thoroughly, let it sit for about 10 minutes, then buff with a soft cloth to bring a shine to the leather surface. You may need to buff once more before sitting on the furniture.
Remove stains such as ink by dipping a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol and rubbing over the spot. Dry the area with a blow dryer. If the stain remains after drying, apply a thick coat of non-gel, non-oily cuticle remover. Leave on overnight, then wipe off with a damp cloth.

Remove dark stains from light-colored leather upholstery by mixing a paste of one part lemon juice with one part cream of tartar. Rub the paste on the stain and leave in place for about 10 minutes. Apply another layer of the paste, work it in, then remove with either a damp sponge or a damp sponge topped with moisturizing soap.

For general leather cleaning, use a moisturizing soap, such as Dove. Lather on with a soft cloth, and wash the item to remove dirt and grime. Do not over wet the leather and do not rinse after washing, just buff with a soft cloth; this allows the moisturizing soap to condition the leather. Polish as usual.

Remove road salt from leather shoes by mixing equal parts water and white vinegar. Dip a cloth in the mixture and wipe over the leather. This may have to be repeated several times to clean the surface. Buff and apply shoe polish.

Upholstery Cleaning and Furniture Cleaning
Many furniture fabrics now carry the upholstered furniture industry’s leather furnitureclean ability code adopted in 1969. It gives the consumer information about the proper furniture cleaning methods for specific fabrics. There are four letters in the code, immediately followed by upholstered furniture cleaning service instructions. The code letters are W, S, W-S, and X.

Code “W”
To prevent overall soil, frequent vacuuming or light brushing to remove dust and grime is a recommended step in furniture cleaning. Spot clean, using the foam only from a water-based cleaning agent such as a mild detergent or non-solvent upholstery shampoo product. Apply foam with a soft brush in a circular motion. Vacuum when dry. Pretest a small area before proceeding. Use a professional furniture cleaning service when an overall soiled condition has been reached.

Code “S”
To prevent overall soil, frequent vacuuming or light brushing to remove dust and grime is recommended. Spot clean using a mild water-free solvent or dry cleaning product containing carbon tetrachloride which is highly toxic. Pretest a small area before proceeding. Furniture cleaning by a professional cleaning service only is recommended.

Code “W-S”
To prevent overall soil, frequent vacuuming or light brushing to remove dust and grime is recommended. Spot clean, with a mild solvent, an upholstery shampoo, or the foam from a mild detergent. When using a solvent or dry cleaning product, follow instructions carefully and clean only in a well ventilated room. Avoid any product which contains carbon tetrachloride which is highly toxic. With either method, pretest a small area before proceeding. Use a professional upholstery furniture cleaners cleaning service when an overall soiled condition has been reached.

Code “X”
Clean this fabric only by vacuuming or light brushing to prevent accumulation of dust or grime. Water-based foam furniture cleaners or solvent based furniture cleaning agents of any kind may cause excessive shrinking, staining or distortion of the surface pile and, therefore, should not be used.

Why is it important to Protect Your Upholstery?
The manufacturer’s upholstery protection that is applied after manufacturing to your furniture wears off over time, through everyday usage. For this reason it is vital to reapply the protection application periodically to your furniture so to preserve the color, beauty and life expectancy of your upholstery.
